About the Race

The Malibu Heroes in Recovery 6K is a unique run/walk presented by The Canyon and Foundations L.A., an outpatient treatment center of  Foundations Recovery Network.

Foundations Recovery Network’s mission is to be the leader in evidence-based, integrated treatment for co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders through clinical services, education and research.

The Heroes in Recovery movement started because, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), 20 million people needed substance abuse treatment last year and did not receive it. About 10 million Americans did not receive needed mental healthcare. The stigma associated with substance abuse and mental health disorders creates a significant barrier to individuals and families seeking help. It takes a heroic effort to live clean and sober each day, and Heroes celebrates that effort. The sixth kilometer separates a Heroes 6K race from a typical 5K to symbolize the extra effort it takes to sustain recovery. The six kilometers also represent the six letters in the word HEROES. These races inspire communities to support recovery, and they also encourage people to live healthy, active lifestyles.

Each registered participant will receive:

  • A finisher’s medal upon crossing the finish line!
  • Race tech tank (women’s/men’s specific)
  • Souvenir bib
  • Re-usable 6K bag
  • Post race nutrition

Join the movement. Run the race. Break the stigma!

The 2017 Charity Beneficiary

The charity beneficiary for the 2017 Heroes in Recovery 6K is New Directions for Youth (NDY), which provides direct services and programs to at-risk youth and families throughout the San Fernando Valley and in the greater Los Angeles area. For more than 40 years, NDY has provided services such as counseling, homework assistance, gang reduction and prevention, literacy, parenting classes, community beautification, summer camp and much more – free of charge – to more than 3000 individuals each year!

Here is one example of how NDY gives hope to our local kids.  Only his name has been changed to protect his privacy:

‘Sean is a twelve-year-old boy who was referred by a friend of the family who knew about the New Directions for Youth program.  Sean was struggling with anger and pain due to the recent gang-related death of his young uncle.  He was very close to his uncle and enjoyed spending time with him. After the loss of his uncle, Sean became sad and struggled with accepting the death. As a result of this inner turmoil, his grades dropped from B’s and C’s to D’s and F’s.

Sean has been at New Directions for Youth for five months participating in individual counseling sessions in his home and addressing the many issues which have come to the surface regarding the death of his uncle.  He was also involved in New Directions for Youth’s Summer Day Camp which he enjoyed and attended daily.  As a result of the services that Sean received from NDY’s program, he is now able to express himself and address the loss of his uncle in a constructive manner.  Sean has a positive attitude toward himself and others.

Sean:  “Sadness happens; but there can be hope in each day and just when life seems hopeless and painful, there is an unknown who steps in”.

The unknown in Sean’s life is NDY. “
