About the Race
The San Diego Heroes race is a unique 6K run/walk presented by Foundations San Diego, an outpatient treatment center of Foundations Recovery Network. Foundations Recovery Network’s mission is to be the leader in evidence-based, integrated treatment for co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders through clinical services, education and research.
Heroes in Recovery has a simple mission: to eliminate the social stigma that keeps individuals with addiction and mental health issues from seeking help, to share stories of recovery for the purpose of encouragement and inspiration, and to create an engaged sober community that empowers people to get involved, give back, and live healthy, active lives. It takes a heroic effort to live clean and sober each day, and a Heroes 6K celebrates that effort. The sixth kilometer separates a Heroes race from a typical 5K to symbolize the extra effort it takes to sustain recovery. The six kilometers also represent the six letters in the word HEROES.
Each registered participant will receive:
- A finisher’s medal upon crossing the finish line!
- Heroes 6K race shirt
- Souvenir bib
- Re-usable 6K bag
- Post race nutrition

The 2018 Charity Beneficiary
Turning Point Home was founded in 1970 by a small group of dedicated individuals who were concerned about the lack of resources in our community for alcoholic women. Located on the edge of San Diego’s Golden Hill park, the Turning Point Home is a community-based, peer-oriented, residential recovery home which provides shelter, food and recovery services to alcoholic women. They support these women in achieving long-term sobriety in a safe, supportive and structured alcohol/drug-free environment through guidance and education.

Be a Volunteer
Interested in helping out at the San Diego Heroes 6K Run/Walk at De Anza Cove Park in Mission Bay? Volunteers have the option to run the race, too! Each volunteer will receive a Heroes volunteer shirt at check-in. (Be sure to register for the run/walk if you plan to do both).

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a time limit to complete the 6K?
A 20-minute mile pace or faster is required, which is the equivalent of a steady walk. If you fall below this pace, we can no longer guarantee course support like aid stations, medical support and portable toilets. If you fall below this pace on an open road, you’ll have to move to the side of the street/onto the sidewalk and obey regular traffic laws. We’re forced to officially cut the course finish time at 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Can I walk the race?
Absolutely! Runners and walkers are not only welcome, but also encouraged! Our training plan will help participants of all paces prepare for race day.
Are strollers welcome?
Of course! Strollers are more than welcome, as long as you position yourself in the back to avoid any tangles and traffic jams.
Do kids run free?
Due to liability concerns, everyone must register for the event, kids included.
Are dogs allowed?
Unfortunately, due to park restrictions, we’re unable to accommodate dogs at this #Heroes6K.
Can I pick up a friend’s packet?
Yes! High fives for being a great friend.
Do I need to be present to claim my award?
Yes — all winners must be present at the award ceremony to claim their award, so make sure you stay for the fun after the race!
Can I register on race day?
Absolutely! You can register on-site during packet pick-up or on race day.
What if I can’t make it on race day?
Great news! You are welcome to switch over to a virtual participant and run the race on your own time. Just email us at [email protected] and we can get you switched over. (Please note, there may be a price difference and your credit card on file will be charged the difference.)
Where do I park on race day?
