About the Race

Foundations Recovery Network and Medivance Billing Service presents the fifth annual South Florida Heroes in Recovery 6K walk/run at the Huizenga Plaza in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Foundations Recovery Network’s mission is to be the leader in evidence-based, integrated treatment for co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders through clinical services, education and research.

The Heroes in Recovery movement started because according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), 20 million people needed substance abuse treatment last year and did not receive it. About 10 million Americans did not receive needed mental healthcare. The stigma associated with substance abuse and mental health disorders creates a significant barrier to individuals and families seeking help.  It takes a heroic effort to live clean and sober each day, and a Heroes 6K celebrates that effort. The sixth kilometer separates a Heroes race from a typical 5K to symbolize the extra effort it takes to sustain recovery. The six kilometers also represent the six letters in the word HEROES. These races inspire communities to support recovery and also to live healthy, active lifestyles.

Each registered participant will receive:

  • A finisher’s medal upon crossing the finish line!

  • Re-usable 6K bag
  • Post race nutrition

The 2017 Charity Beneficiary

 

The charity beneficiary for this race is Fellowship Foundation, a non-profit (501c3) recovery community organization (RCO) located in South Florida. Fellowship Foundation’s goal is to help those in recovery maintain and sustain their recovery regardless of their pathway. They provide peer-based Recovery Support Services (RSS), community education, outreach programs and recovery-focused activities.

Parking Information:

City Park Garage (150 SE 2 ST) down the street on SE 1 AV, the closest to Huizenga Plaza.  The meters are $1.25 per hour and can be paid at the meter or use the Pay By Phone App. Pay By Phone’s the best since you can add money to the meter from your phone.

Kid’s Activities:
After race participants cross the start line, kid’s activities will begin. Family friendly fun such as balloon twisting and face painting can be found in the festival area. These are free and open to the public!

Awards presented to top 4 Male/Female in Overall and Masters Overall Categories- Additional prizes awarded to top 4 Male/Female finishers in their age divisions. There is no “double dipping” for awards. If you are 40+ years of age and are the 4th male/female to cross the finish line you will receive 4th overall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a time limit to complete the 6K?

Yes, please note that a 20 minute mile pace or faster is required for this event. This is equivalent to a consistently steady walk. If you fall below this pace, the race organizers can no longer guarantee course support. Aid Stations, medical support, portable toilets, and course closures will begin to become unavailable to participants. If you fall below this pace and are on an open road, you will need to move to the side/up on the sidewalk and obey regular traffic laws. Course cut off time for the finish is 1 hour and 15 minutes.

 

Can I walk the race?

Yes…runners and walkers are all welcome! Need help getting ready? Follow our training plan!

 

Are strollers welcome?

Yes, strollers are allowed. We recommend that strollers start at the back of the pack to avoid any trip hazards. 

 

Do kids run free?

No, all participants are required to register for the event.

 

Are dogs allowed?

Yes! We ask that runners/walkers with dogs keep their furry friends on a leash at all times during the event. There will be dog bowls with water near the post-race nutrition.

 

What activities are available for kids?

After race participants cross the start line, kid’s activities will begin. Family friendly fun such as caricaturing drawing and face painting can be found in the festival area, and several kid’s-only contests will be hosted by the announcer. Contests will range from hula hooping, to ring toss, to a super fun dance-off! All are free and open to the public!

 

Can I pick up a friend’s packet?

            Yes! You are welcome to pick up a race packet for someone else.

 

Do I need to be present to claim my award?

Yes, you must be present at the awards ceremony to collect your award. We do not mail awards.

 

Can I register on race day?

Yes! Walk up registration is available at both packet pick up and on race day. Cash or check only, please.
