The Portland Heroes race is a unique 6K run/walk presented by Oregon Trail Recovery , Awakenings By the Sea and Foundations Recovery Network.

Oregon Trail Recovery provides long term intensive outpatient treatment services in Portland, teaching everyday tools to living a clean and sober life. Awakenings By the Sea supports women in recovery with specialized care, guiding women towards overcoming drug dependence. Foundations Recovery Network’s mission is to be the leader in evidence-based, integrated treatment for co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders through clinical services, education and research.

Heroes in Recovery has a simple mission: to eliminate the social stigma that keeps individuals with addiction and mental health issues from seeking help, to share stories of recovery for the purpose of encouragement and inspiration, and to create an engaged sober community that empowers people to get involved, give back, and live healthy, active lives. It takes a heroic effort to live clean and sober each day, and a Heroes 6K* celebrates that effort. The sixth kilometer separates a Heroes race from a typical 5K to symbolize the extra effort it takes to sustain recovery. The six kilometers also represent the six letters in the word HEROES.

Each registered participant will receive:

  • A finisher’s medal upon crossing the finish line!
  • Race tech tank (women’s/men’s specific)
  • Souvenir bib
  • Re-usable 6K bag
  • Post race nutrition

The 2017 Charity Beneficiary


The charity beneficiary for this run/walk is Hooper Detox of Central City Concern.
Central City Concern (CCC) provides comprehensive solutions to ending homelessness and achieving self-sufficiency. This is done through providing affordable and supportive housing; integrated primary, behavioral, and addiction treatment health care services; employment support; and positive peer relationships. Hooper Detox, a CCC program, provides medical detoxification and stabilization services, a crucial step for many who have resolved to address their substance use and start the path to recovery. Patients who successfully complete the Hooper program are often connected to the rest of CCC’s continuum of ongoing treatment and supportive housing services in order.

Interested in helping out at the Portland Heroes 6K run/walk? Volunteers have the option to run the race, too! Each volunteer will receive a Heroes volunteer shirt at check-in. (Be sure to register for the run/walk if you plan to do both).

Kid’s Activities :
After race participants cross the start line, kid’s activities will begin. Family friendly fun such as caricature drawing and face painting can be found in the festival area! Games vary by location; all are free and open to the public!

Frequently Asked Questions


Is there a time limit to complete the 6K?

Yes, please note that a 20 minute mile pace or faster is required for this event. This is equivalent to a consistently steady walk. If you fall below this pace, the race organizers can no longer guarantee course support. Aid Stations, medical support, portable toilets, and course closures will begin to become unavailable to participants. If you fall below this pace and are on an open road, you will need to move to the side/up on the sidewalk and obey regular traffic laws. Course cut off time for the finish is 1 hour and 15 minutes.


Can I walk the race?

Yes…runners and walkers are all welcome! Need help getting ready? Follow our training plan!


Are strollers welcome?

Yes, strollers are allowed. We recommend that strollers start at the back of the pack to avoid any trip hazards. 


Do kids run free?

No, all participants are required to register for the event.


Are dogs allowed?

Yes! We ask that runners/walkers with dogs keep their furry friends on a leash at all times during the event. There will be dog bowls with water near the post-race nutrition.


Can I pick up a friend’s packet? 

Yes! You are welcome to pick up a race packet for someone else.


Do I need to be present to claim my award?

Yes, you must be present at the awards ceremony to collect your award. We do not mail awards.


Can I register on race day?

Yes! Walk up registration is available at both packet pick up and on race day. Cash or check only, please.

Can I get a refund after I register?

We are unable to provide refunds or transfers to another participate, but we can change your registration to a virtual runner (no difference in cost will be refunded for change).
