Approximately two years ago, working in a restaurant caused Alejandro to pick up the bad habit of drinking in excess. He noticed his drinking habit becoming stronger every day at work. He also drank once he came home from work and in all his spare time. It became such a problem that he decided it was time to change something. He quit the job and turned a different direction.
Alejandro was fortunate and didn’t get addicted to the alcohol. He was able to get away from the bad habit and stop the alcohol abuse without major consequences or addiction. He drinks very little today and only socially. Every now and then he has a beer with friends. He lives in Baton Rouge and works at a local company and decided to come out and attend the 5K for recovery to show his support for those who battle the disease. He sees alcoholism and addiction in some friends that have not faced it yet. He is concerned because he can see addiction growing among those few friends.
He is working 12-hour shifts right now, but in his effort to create a better version of himself and live a better life, he exercises and runs as time allows. “If there is a will, there is a way,” he says, “I had to stop making excuses.”
His hopes are with those who are less fortunate and can’t stop by themselves. He believes that breaking the stigma is an important thing to do to help people to overcome addiction.
