One morning, after a long couple of days of using, I hit my knees and begged God to either take me or save me. A true miracle happened at that very moment. I rose and knew exactly what to do. I went for a long run to try and clear my head. I called a friend in recovery and asked him to take me to a 12-step meeting. I had tried those before but for some reason, on that day, I was completely ready to receive the messages I would hear. That day was January 17, 2003. I tear up when I type this date. I went to 90+ meetings in 90 days, got a sponsor, and changed everything about my life. I can’t believe the amazing life I’ve had since then. 9th step promises galore!
If you’re tired and ready for a new life, I recommend a 12-step program and claiming a Higher Power. When you honestly work that program and pray to a God of your understanding, you will feel fearless against the disease of addiction. I have never seen it fail when worked with all your might!
My life today is absolutely and utterly glorious. I married again (an earth person!) and after many odds, we have 2 beautiful sons who were born 7 and 9 years after I got clean. I have my own business and live a fulfilling, worthwhile life. I am still active in my 12 Step program, speak with my sponsor regularly, and pray to God each morning, thanking Him for keeping me clean and sober.
Throughout everything, I always ran for exercise. Running has been my prayer and friend for a long time. For me and my excessive energy, that has been a great outlet to burn off steam. I am pleased that I can give back by participating in and running races that benefit recovery communities.
