My name is Roy. I came to Tennessee in 1990 and met my wife, which I think is the best thing that ever happened to me. Before I met my wife, I though life was grand. I would wake up each morning not knowing what happened the night before. That was the only way I knew how to live at that time. When I met her, she made me realize the potential I had and the love that she gave me made me realize that I had to change the way my life was going. I thank God for her and my support group of friends that are out here with me today supporting me.
Roy had a big group of supporters that came to the Leipers Fork Heroes in Recovery 6K to support his recovery. I asked him how they all came together to support him.
I was the last one to know about it actually. My wife runs a health club in Dickson, TN. They always have these 5K event brochures laid out and I have never really paid that much attention to them. My wife has never really pushed me to take part in an event such as this and all of a sudden she gave me a form and said sign this. I looked at the brochure and saw Heroes in Recovery and thought what is this? Come to find out all of my friends had signed up for this event and they gave their support as a gift because I have just celebrated my 21st year in recovery. This support from my friends and family makes me look forward to living my lifetime in recovery.
