My name is Becki and I am an addict.
My sobriety date is August 7, 2012. When I came into recovery I tried a few times to get clean. I had gone to a few treatment centers and to a few Outpatient centers. Each time it got worse, just like they said it would. I eventually found myself homeless, lost custody of my children and I didn’t have anywhere to go. Finally I found a treatment center in Middle Tennessee and that is where I eventually ended up. When I went to the treatment center I was not totally sold on recovery when I got there. That is a big part of my story because I only went because I was homeless and winter was coming and no one wants to be homeless during the winter time!
I got through treatment and stayed on in transitional housing. At six months clean, I went to a Narcotics Anonymous convention in Alabama and something happened while I was there. I started to see people like me living clean lives and having fun and it changed something in me. I did whatever they told me to do in the beginning so I could stay in the transitional housing but later on it became so I could stay clean. I got a sponsor and did ninety meetings in ninety days and I started volunteering in the treatment center. I stayed in transitional housing for a year and eventually was hired by the treatment center as a janitor at first.
Today I am honored to say that within the next year I hope to become a licensed drug and alcohol addiction counselor and regain custody of my youngest daughter. It had to come to a point of me being clean before I could get custody of my kids. Today I am completely sold on the clean lifestyle. I eat, drink and sleep recovery. It is not boring like I thought it would be. Yesterday at five years and two months clean, I bought my own house. There is no way I could have gone from homeless to homeowner in five years without the God of my understanding and the people in this program. I owe my life to Narcotics Anonymous, the people in this program and to my Higher Power! I am super grateful to be sober and to give this testimony!
