On the rainy day of May 10, 2012, I was traveling home from my tour of duty as an officer of the Key Biscayne, FL police department. I reached the Hollywood Boulevard exit and encountered what I thought to be a fatal crash. Unknown to me, a 23 year old man who was enraged with unknown causes ambushed me and shot through my police car window, striking me in the neck.
That day changed my life, not only physically but also mentally. It also gave me a new ticket in life! I realized that life is short and that one needs to be the best one can be all the time. It was a miracle. There were many angels, such as BSO sheriffs, surgeons and hospital staff.
After 10 days in the ICU and 11 months in recovery, I’m here to tell the story. I never gave up! It’s not in me. I’m not a quitter! I had faith in God and those around me. I have faith in the world, in the good and in the power of giving. I’m still recovering and I have many disabilities that I will learn to live with. One thing I know is that I’M ALIVE! So I’m grateful!
