I met Krystal at Recovery Fest Nashville. This festival was packed with fun, music and great people. I am glad that Krystal gave me an interview and told me about her recovery.
Krystal has been sober since November 2011. She began her recovery with a full year of long-term treatment. Xanax and methamphetamine had gotten her down, and she was tired of her lifestyle. One day she used, drove and got pulled over with her small children in the car. That led to a DUI, time in jail and the loss of custody of her kids. She understands today how careless and bad her decisions were at that time. Her family didn’t believe in her anymore, even when she said she would give treatment a chance.
Her family lives in western Tennessee, but Krystal decided to stay in Nashville after her treatment, because her chances for recovery were much better there. She got a job and has kept it for almost two years. She is going to nursing school and has a good relationship with her family. They used to worry about her children, but now they know that the children are safe with her. Her daughters are three and six years old and are very happy with their mother.
I asked Krystal what advice she would like to give someone who is starting new in recovery. She replied, “You have to learn how to love yourself. If you love yourself, you know better and you will do better.” Krystal is a 30-year-old mother, and she doesn’t mind being single. She focuses on her life and that of her children. Krystal goes to a 12-step meeting a day and has had the same sponsor for one and a half years. She is active in her support group.
It makes me happy to see the smiling faces of her pretty daughters. Krystal shows a lot of love and compassion. I am so glad she got her life turned around, and I wish her good luck with school and her future.
