Q: Start by describing the situation that changed your life or a loved one’s life
A: Things were out of control in my life. I had become someone I was no longer proud of. I had no idea how I would ever get help or change. My situation seemed hopeless. I was lost in the depths of addiction and depression.
Q: Based on your situation or story, was there a turning point that prompted the need for change or help?
A: A family member attempted suicide due to his failing battle with addiction. His suicide attempt was not successful. He shot himself in the face and survived.
Q: How did you get help?
A: I took the brave first step to talk to a friend who had success in sobriety. I did not want my life to lead to suicide although that is what I felt I wanted many days. My friend took me to some meetings and introduced me to some people who helped me see that there was a better life for me–a life of LIVING rather than slowly killing myself every day.
Q: Based on your experience, what lessons did you learn? Do you have any advice to give?
A: There are no mistakes. Everything that has happened in my life has led me to this point. Every moment is a blessing. I have no regrets. While I do not want to go back, the lessons I learned have made me who I am. I am so grateful for my life today. I am blessed. I am finally capable of seeing the abundance that is all around me in every moment. I am extremely grateful.
The best advice I ever got was to be grateful. Changing my mind changed everything. Now I choose thoughts of peace, gratitude and abundance over those of chaos, anger and lack.
Q: If you or your loved one is in recovery, describe what life is like today.
A: My life is amazing. I can see what is happening and appreciate the blessings that surround me every day. I take care of myself. I have shifted my intentions to living a full and actualized life every day rather than being self-destructive. I acknowledge and accept all the truths of life, the good and the bad. It is all a blessing and one that I am grateful to be awake to receive.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to share?
A: There is always a chance to start again. There is always hope for us. Until our last day, we can continue to try to be better. This is how I live my life, to be better every day. There is no destination, only the beauty and wonder of the journey.
