Connecting Through Pages

It is true that we all have a story. The old adage “don’t judge a book by its cover” is much like new chapters in life. The previous pages can look completely different than the ones you are on today. As experience matures, so does the quality of the material.

All of the different chapters of life bring me to a new page. As one goes along there are times when it is necessary to stop.  During those stopping points sometimes I flip back through old pages for review. I continue learning through the developing characters. The best part about this book of life I am speaking of is that I get to create it as I go through using the knowledge from my personal history and being able to grow and change through different lessons. Through this journey I have witnessed and overcome defeat and celebrated triumphs. There are chapters that will take your breath away and at the same time make you cry.

I share pages with people, they show me their book, I show them mine and we learn from one another’s writing styles, which is symbolic of our collective journey.  Swapping the similarities and differences. Finding correlating themes that we can examine together. Coming up with different ways to create relationships built through gripping literacy.

In an effort to continue creating what is not yet written there is a lot of contemplation. How will certain things unfold? What is going to come next? Which way do I go? The answers come as the story is written. I have found that I am grateful for the opportunity to come across unexpected plot twists. As much as I am anticipating the book to continue on without obstacles and challenges it makes for some “can’t put this book down” kind of days. These wonders along, with the “page turner” days, allow us to enjoy this interesting read. Have you read your book today?

Thank you for continuing to read my blog. Also, please check out my fellow advocates’ blogs! Heroes in Recovery is a movement designed to break the stigma associated with addiction and mental health. We do many things to support this mission including asking people to share their recovery stories with us. We also host various events around the country including our Heroes in Recovery 6k run/walk series. These focus on working with communities to raise awareness and break the stigma and motivating others to get involved.

You can visit Heroes in Recovery or reach out to me on Facebook and I can personally help you get started.

Godspeed,

Hillary
