- Alcohol
- Faith
Did you seek treatment or get professional help? What was the process like?
We just came to the realization that the root of all of our problems in life was alcohol. One day, we just decided to draw a line in the sand and not drink at all anymore. We prayed and God has given us the strength to do it.
What have you done to keep yourself from falling back into that life?
We have put God first in every area of our life. We try our best to be obedient to Him with all of our decisions. We pray together often and it is very helpful. Another important thing, is keeping away from old crowds and temptations. We have made a conscience effort to surround ourselves with people we aspire to be like. We spend our time with people who love us unconditionally, yet hold us accountable. We found a wonderful church with unbelievable people there that have become our new friends. They want to see us grow in every area of our lives and be successful, as opposed to just wanting us to hangout with them and do the same stuff we always have. As Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people that you spend the most time with.” So spending time with old friends who have the same habits would be sure to lead you right back where you started. The definition of insanity is “to do the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” We did not like the results from the way we were living, so we changed things and gave it God.
What is life like now?
Life now is so much better. One of my very favorite bible verses is 2 Chronicles 7:14 “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I would hear their cry from heaven and I will forgive their sin and heal their land.” We have prayed, sought God and turned from our wicked ways and are living witnesses that God will do what He says and “heal our land.” Areas in our lives that were problematic, many of which were caused by alcohol, are being healed by God. Since we have surrendered our lives to God, He has blessed us in so many ways is continuing to do so. It is truly amazing. We try to help other people that are put in our paths however we can. I have found that if you take care of others, God will make sure that you are taken care of.
In general, life is so much better these days. Things that always seem to go wrong in the past, now seem to fall into place. It is a wonderful life and I thank God for it.
