Q: Start by describing the situation that changed your life or a loved one’s life.
A: My eyes were finally opened after two overdoses within six months plus a year of incarceration. I hit my bottom and wanted a life with my family; just to simply become a respected, productive member of society.
Q: How did you get help?
A: I followed a few suggestions. Got a home group, a sponsor, and worked the 12 steps of recovery.
Q: Based on your experience, what lessons did you learn? Do you have any advice to give?
A: The most important thing I have learned is to reach out to people and be open-minded to suggestions when times get tough.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to share?
A: Life away from drugs and alcohol has been very challenging for me. I celebrated a year clean a few weeks ago but my disease runs very deep in me and this is a program of action, so I have to apply step work in my everyday living to deal with life’s challenges. This has given me happiness in sobriety and I wouldn’t change it for the world. I came from being in a homeless shelter a little over a year ago to having my family, a house, and full-time work as a heavy equipment operator. Recovery has helped me reach goals that I would have never achieved while in active use. I love myself again and because of that I have learned to love others. I promise you if I can do it, anyone can.
