Susanne Johnson shared like we in recovery are taught to do. She shared what it was like, what happened and what it’s like now. Good share, Susanne.
Just a couple of comments (opinions that is) about details in her share that caught my eye:
Commitment is not an option. When I was asked if I was willing to go to any length to stay sober, my answer was yes. I made my commitment. Some people will say, “Relapse is part of recovery,” and these are the people who couldn’t keep their commitment. They made the choice to use whatever chemical was their chemical of choice.
She said recovery takes a long time. I agree, but I like the verbiage, “One day at a time.” It doesn’t seem so impossible that way.
I got to the rooms of recovery through a treatment center. Of course I entered the facility with the idea I was going to save “the sick ones,” but I discovered if anyone was sick, it was me. Most of Susanne’s story is the story of a lot of recovering members of whichever 12-step program they use. We can only pray that when someone walks in the door, they will stay and wait for the miracle to happen. My Higher Power and hope and trust in the fellowship have given me 32 years of a new life.
God bless. Keep coming back.
