Brooke has been working for a drug testing lab in the treatment industry for two years. Neither she nor any of her siblings developed a problem with drugs or alcohol. Her grandfather has some trouble with alcohol but never sought any form of treatment. Brooke is not really close to his side of the family, and his alcoholism does not affect her much. When she recalls her high school years, she remembers a couple people that had trouble with substances or alcohol. While she was in college, there were no drug problems around her, and she managed to drink socially without developing a problem.
Even though she hasn’t gone through addiction, she supports people in recovery and tries to relate to others in recovery. The company she works for gives back to the recovery community and in the last year has donated about half a million dollars in treatment scholarships. Brooke’s job doesn’t give her direct contact with any clients in facilities, but she is regularly in contact with the staff, many of whom are in recovery. She feels empathy and support towards people who are affected by this disease. She is happy for everyone who makes it into recovery. She is so grateful to be able to work in an industry like this. “Don’t be afraid to get help,” she says. “People are so friendly and helpful in the facilities I know, and they are trying to help you to get into recovery. They really care. All you have to do is give it a try.”
