Teri came to the Heroes in Recovery 6K in Leiper’s Fork, TN from Joelton, TN. She likes to run several races throughout the year and as she found the Heroes in Recovery run on the internet, she thought that this would be a great cause. She did not know much about the movement prior to her registration and was glad she joined it. When I asked her if any members of her family or friends are in recovery from addiction, alcoholism or mental health she stated, “Oh yes, probably everybody does.”
Teri currently has a family member who is suffering from addiction, and even she doesn’t get to see the person on a regular basis because he is not living close by. Teri said it is difficult to know the extent of the problem. Teri feels helpless about the situation and she believes the addicted individual must first decide to accept help for himself. Teri has never struggled herself, has never used drugs and only occasionally has a drink.
Teri likes to be fit and active and started running at age 50. She just wanted to get healthier and has now been running five years and enjoys it. “Running makes you feel good about yourself,” Teri says, and she sees that a person has to love himself to get into successful recovery. “Running is also about accomplishment. If you can do this, you can do anything!” she mentions during our interview.
When it comes to running, Teri states that she was slow at the beginning, but she kept going. She calls it her ‘Teri-Trot’– not fast, but it makes her happy. “It gives you a laugh, the happiness lasts longer and it gives you wrinkles in the right places when you laugh!” states Teri with a hearty laugh.
It was Teri’s first year at Heroes in Recovery 6k in Leiper’s Fork, TN but she plans to come back for sure next year.
