Vasco T. is a living example of how effective treatment and active recovery created a man of integrity. He is only 30 years old, but Vasco views addiction as a gift because the tribulations he endured eventually lead to his purpose in life.
According to Vasco:
Life is challenging. I crawled through the depths of hell in active alcoholism and drug addiction for over 15 years! I failed at living and I failed at dying, but I will never stop fighting. I spent a long time failing until God gave me the gift of desperation.
When I was finally desperate enough, I made the decision to stop dying and start living. I chose to fight–fight like I’ve never fought before! I did something differently– I got brutally honest, and put my ego and pride aside. Through that, I found willingness to do whatever had to be done at any cost to start truly living.
My sobriety is not about a life of simply existing. Sobriety is about having a warm heart with love, deep feelings that could bring tears, honest laughter, and the ability to give back to others. I am excited about life and I am an active member of the community.
Through recovery, I found love for myself and gained a life I could never have fathomed. I remember the magnitude of hopelessness and sorrow I and others struggling with substance abuse disorder go through. So, I had a vision of giving love, hope, and support to the ones despaired and stigmatized by addiction. “In order for one to recover, hope and love are the key ingredients.”
I had a vision, and eventually Hope for Recovery was founded. Today, my colleagues and I will unite with others in active recovery and join forces with addiction advocates to end stigma, deal hope, deliver solutions, and find life.
