“I lost everything in my life and was totally alone,” Shane says. “Losing it all was the turning point that made me change from addiction to recovery.” Shane is currently in long-term treatment at a facility in Kentucky. It was only four months ago that his life broke apart after abusing methamphetamine and opiates for quite some time. In only these four months he got his family back. He is still in treatment, but he knows they are waiting for him.
Shane is very proud that he managed to walk through the doors of the facility he is in and into his recovery. He found his higher power through the 12 steps and learned so much more along the way than just to stay away from drugs. He learned a new way to live. The biggest advice he got was to live in today and work on himself to change and find his higher power. He feels that with his higher power everything is possible in his life today and he looks forward to the things that are coming his way. His new sober life feels like a gift to him and he feels committed to protect it.
“If you become sober, you start to know the real you,” he says. “I struggled with worrying about outside issues, but today I learned to overcome it and pray about it.”
