Q: Start by describing the situation that changed your life or a loved one’s life.
A: Hi Friends, My name is Tonya W., also known as Authoress Tonya W. I am a grateful recovered alcoholic. My sober date is March 20, 2011. That was the day that I decided to give my will over to God and put down the alcohol, so that I could improve the quality of life for myself and my family. During a two month binge, I decided that I had enough of being sick and tired. During the last month of the binge, I was no longer able to function as I previously could while drinking. I became paranoid, afraid, and lonely. I decided to step out on faith and get the help that I needed.
Q: Based on your situation or story, was there a turning point that prompted the need for change or help?
A: Looking in the mirror and wondering where the real Tonya had gone. I did not recognize the person that was staring back at me. I knew that I deserved better and so did my children.
Q: How did you or your HERO get help?
A: I went to a hospital crisis center; then to a hospital for detox for five days. I also went to an inpatient rehab center right after detox for 28 days.
Q: Based on your experience, what lessons did you learn? Do you have any advice to give?
A: I learned that self-preservation is the key. I learned that nothing was more important than me and my family, except God. I learned a lot about addiction and alcoholism. I learned to really love myself in spite of my mistakes. I felt that God had saved my life for the purpose of helping others who are in active addiction and recovery.
Q: If you are in recovery, describe what life is like today.
A: My life is a lot different now. I have been blessed with better health. I have been blessed with a bigger house for me and my family. I have been blessed to be able write a book about my life and journey of recovery.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to share?
A: I would like for people to know that there is hope and healing in recovery. I would like for people to know that if they need help, and want help that it is available to them. I would like for people that are in active addiction to know that there are still people out here that really care and want the best for them.
