My name is Erika and my addiction started when I was 16 years old. A little over a year ago, I found myself in jail with some major charges. That is when I decided to change my life.
I realized that I was ready to change my ways and also to change myself. My parents and family have always been very supportive and encouraged me to get help. Honestly, this is the first time in my life that I have opened myself up and actually wanted the help.
I have been addicted to many drugs. I have been clean for nine months and I have never been happier in my life than in this moment right now. I am willing to share my story with anyone who wants to hear it.
This is the first time that I have actually been in recovery. It is amazing to see the support you can find in recovery programs. I have seen amazing changes in myself that I have not seen in ten years.
For those seeking recovery, my advice would be that it does get better. You have to love yourself first, and that was my biggest problem. I always wanted to run from my problems and spend my time trying to fix everyone else rather than concentrating on myself. Positivity is essential and like they tell us in the program, go one day at a time.
