- Drugs
Hello, family. My Name is Cody B. and I am an addict in recovery. My Clean date is March 19, 2009, and that is only by the grace of my higher power, God. I never glorify my using, so I will be sharing my experience, strength, and hope.
I actually grew up with a very loving mother and father. When I was seven years old, my dad went to Huntsville Prison for armed robbery. My mom immediately divorced my dad at that time. Then she married a man that used to get drunk and beat her severely on a constant basis. In those days, if the woman did not press charges on the man, nothing happened. Three years later when my dad was released from prison, my mom finally pressed charges on my stepfather and he went to jail. Afterwards, my parents got back together.
My dad grew up on the border in Brownsville, Texas where he learned to smoke weed when he was young. So, I started smoking weed when I was ten years old. My siblings and I grew up on the southeast side of Ft. Worth, Texas where we were not liked by other boys in our neighborhood. So we learned martial arts and street fighting skills. As the years went on, I shared a bedroom with my older brother. That is where I was introduced to all types of drugs: uppers, downers, mushrooms, and LSD.
Somehow, I made it to the age of eighteen. So, I immediately joined the Army National Guard. I got married and had two beautiful daughters. Now you see, for a long time I thought I was a very functional working addict. Then one day, the SWAT team raided the house and people were taken away in handcuffs.
My wife sold drugs to an undercover agent twice in our home. So, she went to jail and I was left to try and sort out the remaining mess of our lives. Luckily, I had a younger brother in a support group. He always would ask me to go to meetings with him. I never would– until I reached my complete bottom.
I finally gathered the courage and strength it took to go in the doors of my very first meeting. I knew that I had to do everything they suggested if I was going to make it work. So, I found myself a home group. Got a sponsor and basic text information and started some work. My sponsor told me to do three things: call him every day, stay away from the dope house, and go to a meeting every day for three months and maybe we could do some work. That saved my life.
I stay plugged in to my recovery, do service work and make meetings. A lot of meetings! Meeting makers make it!! I am so grateful today for my life and the gifts of giving back what was freely given to me! I hope my story will help carry the message to just one still suffering addict.
My message is: “Hope. Our promise is freedom from active addiction. God Loves you and so do I. Thank you for allowing me to share. My Name is Cody B., and I am an addict.
