I am a mother of an active addict that has been in this disease for about fifteen years now. It is an absolutely heartbreaking, gut-wrenchingly painful ordeal for the entire family.
My three precious grandchildren have probably had to endure the most pain. I’ve had the oldest for most of his life. We were very active in the lives of the younger two grandchildren before they were adopted and relocated to Florida with other grandparents about five years ago. It is hard on these kids and it is something they will live with for the rest of their lives and for no fault of their own.
With addiction comes lies, theft, domestic violence, and many other crimes. It is a vicious cycle that repeatedly unfolds. You can no longer trust your loved one in your home; you always feel “on guard”. Then there are the many nights you lie awake worried if they will make it through the night, or your heart skips a beat every time the phone rings. I have raced out many times to pick up my battered, beaten daughter. I have woken many nights with a feeling something was wrong, only to find out there really was.
Addiction creates complete chaos for all involved and absolutely drains you. The ONLY thing that gets me through is God. He is my rock. So-called friends and family will turn their backs, but God will never leave me.
I love my daughter as any other parent loves theirs. Mine is just ill and needs a bit more love, that’s all.
