My name is Stacy, and I am an addict. I am the youngest of seven children. I was raised in a loving family. We moved a lot growing up. When I started junior high, peer pressure was in full swing, and to fit in, I hung out with the “rough crowd.” I started drinking and drugging at 13, and I didn’t stop until I was 39.
What started out fun ended up ugly. I dropped out of school in the 8th grade, was raped twice by the time I was 16, ran the streets, sold drugs and was completely addicted, primarily to meth, by the time I was 20. I had been in and out of jail seven times by the time I was 30, I had attempted suicide three times by the time I was 39.
On December 20, 2004, I finally surrendered and asked for help, which was the hardest thing I ever did in my life. I got a sponsor, began going to 12-Step meetings and started working the 12 steps. My life changed. I went back to school, and today I am a professional member of society. I work at Michael’s House as a residential counselor supervisor for the Stabilization Center in Palm Springs. I have had the pleasure of being a part of a wonderful family at Michael’s House for four years. I live today, and that in itself is a miracle.
