- Alcohol
- Drugs
I am 11 years sober as of September 12, 2002. The biggest positive change in my life is the fact that I am never lonely due to the presence of a higher power and the fellowship of recovery. The fact that I am an alcoholic and drug addict led me to a need for recovery. The turning point happened after I used and drank alcohol for a year while also attending support group meetings. I continued to come back, and I stopped drinking.
One important truth I learned through the process is that to seek God is the way to know that God’s love and power is real. Today I am most proud that I am a sober father. My biggest struggle in ongoing recovery is being a father. The way I overcome that is by being a father. I have been able to travel to the Congo in Africa on a mission trip, and I am also a substance abuse counselor today. Those are a couple things I have pursued on this journey that I am particularly proud of.
Words that have helped me on this road are, “Is there a truth or piece of advice I have learned that has helped you on this road?” and “I love you, keep coming back.” I would tell someone who is afraid they can’t do it in the beginning of this journey to find a group of strong peers who work a good recovery program and get involved.
