I had been using drugs and alcohol since the age of 13. I mostly abused marijuana, painkillers, benzodiazepines and alcohol.
By the time I reached college, my using had progressed drastically and I was abusing OxyContin, morphine and other strong painkiller narcotics.
I had been dating a girl for a while and we decided to have a night out on the town. I could never do anything clean or sober at that point and knew that night was going to be no different. We went to a comedy show at the Laughing Skull where I preceded to get inebriated. I made a fool of not only myself but my girlfriend that I truly cared about.
After the show was over, I was so intoxicated that I told her I needed help. Deep down, I knew that was what I needed. I convinced her to let me drive home which put both of our lives at risk. Luckily, we made it home safely and the next morning I woke on my parents’ kitchen floor with my mom and dad standing over me. We began to search for help.
We had no idea where to turn. Luckily, one of our family friends had a family member who went through something similar and they pointed us to an outpatient treatment center in GA.
The turning point for me was knowing that the life I was living was not the one I wanted. By abusing drugs and alcohol I was selling myself short from becoming the man I always knew I could be. It made me numb to my friends, girlfriends and most importantly my family. I felt empty inside and had no purpose in life. I knew I needed help so I decided to reach out.
Life is precious; it’s a journey and a battle. I went through a lot and came out the other side a better man. It was not easy admitting I was imperfect and no one ever wants to feel “less than”. If you or someone you know is struggling, speak up and ask for help.
I was able to start my own business that gives back to families that don’t know where to turn to help someone that is struggling with addiction. I am able to enjoy the things in life that matter like relationships, happiness, love and joy. I have gotten back into sports, golf and other hobbies that I once loved.
Don’t be afraid! Getting clean and sober is the best decision you will ever make! Reach out for help.
