Brian C.’s recovery journey began April 8, 2007 after coming out of a two-day drug and alcohol induced blackout. He experienced decades of substance use, alcoholism, depression and eating disorders, and two trips to psychiatric facilities until finally, suicidal thoughts led to his decision for the need for recovery.
He has learned some important truths during his recovery process.
“Recovery is not blue skies. Steps backwards happen. Negative self-talk happens. These things can be as important as the steps forward if used as a learning tool.”
Brian struggles with “Understanding that I am not my thoughts and that I am enough” He adds, “I overcome that through the tools given me in recovery. I go to 12-step for balance. I have been in therapy for over twelve years and I take anti-depressants. All are important to me in my recovery. There is no shame in any of them.”
Recovery has made many gifts possible for Brian. Aside from his sobriety he is most proud of the ability to allow himself to be loved. He restored family and personal relationships. His fiancé was there for his descent into his bottom. Trust took years to rebuild, but Brian says it was completely worth it.
To those who may be new to the road of recovery Brian would share this helpful truth, “As long as we are above ground, recovery is possible. Do everything you can to stay above ground and keep stepping forward even when it feels like quicksand. You are not alone. Don’t isolate. Reach out. There is a large community out there who wants to see you succeed. The first step is scary. I was terrified, but there is no courage without fear. We are here for you.”
