The moment that made me realize I needed change in my life was when I was given a spark of hope by a peer in recovery who walked in my shoes and found a better way of life. After 13 years of homelessness and over 30 incarcerations I was left weary and desiring change.
I got help through treatment, Recovery housing, peer coaching, the 12 step fellowship program and volunteering in the community.
The lesson I learned is that, for me, the first use of any substance is the one that gets me every time. If I stay away from the first one, and don’t pick up, no matter what, I won’t get high and things will get better.
My life is amazing in comparison! I have a relationship with my daughter and other family. I’m employable and trustworthy. I vote, I have a valid license and legal automobile. I have no legal issues, I’m not homeless, in the hospital or jail, and I didn’t have to pay good money just to feel ok after waking up this morning. I feel better than I ever did while using and it’s FREE!
Life is better in recovery!
