Heroes In Recovery

The most important thing about recovery is to pass the message on. | Maurice Gibb

Recovery is many, many things, which makes it hard to define. It doesn’t have a static definition; it has an ongoing, morphing definition. This is just a snapshot, but for the moment, it’s the best we could do.

Recovery is more than rehab.

It is a state of body, a state of mind, an all-encompassing posture of the spirit. It is a concerted effort and personal journey, a day-to-day decision and a lifelong expression.

Recovery is a hard-won fight.

It is brought about by dedication, commitment, and honest introspection. It is the result of immense support from friends, family, neighbors, coworkers, rehab professionals, counselors and therapists. It is a collective effort.

Recovery is one day at a time.

It does not concern itself with the prospect of years. It is perpetuated by one courageous step after another, by a focus on the next 24 hours rather than the next month or year. It blossoms in a person’s heart, morning, noon and night.

Recovery is an epic story.

It is a history of turmoil, of success and failure, of falling down and reaching out, that culminates in transformation. It deserves to be heard. It is an ongoing tale that can uplift and inspire others.

Recovery is a battle-cry.

It is the collective shout of people who have decided not to be slaves to addiction any longer. It is their anthem, their beating heart, their act of war against abusive things, against self-medication and self-destruction.

Recovery is here.
