Lindsey came to the Heroes in Recovery 6K at Leiper’s Fork to support people battling the disease of addiction. She an addict or in recovery, but she has friends that have struggled with it in various forms from alcoholism to eating disorders, especially anorexia.
I asked her how it feels to see people suffering from the disease, and she replied, “It’s hard to see, but as a friend it is important to give them the support they need.” She sees running as good therapy for both the person in recovery and the one helping him or her. Lindsey runs about five times a week, considers it great stress relief and would advise people to use it in their recovery. It does not have to be a long run. She likes to run after work to decompress before going to sleep, and the timing and distance depends on how much time she has to spare each day. She doesn’t like to miss the therapeutic effects running gives her.
Lindsey works in an emergency room and has a particularly stressful job there. She sees a lot of people come in because of addiction, alcoholism and mental health. She has to deal with the victims of accidents in which alcohol or drugs were involved. She sees how hard addiction and accidents are on families. She mentions that “It’s tough to see a young person coming in the ER with an overdose. All we can do is try to save that life this day and hope that someday they make a full recovery.”
