“I had lost everyone I ever cared about or loved,” is how Robert from Blythe, California, described reaching his turning point in life, where he knew he needed treatment. His mental and emotional health was gone along with all meaningful relationships and friendships. He felt sad and overwhelmed with life and turned his life over and decided to give treatment a try to get over his drug problems and start a new life.
Robert began his sobriety only 38 days ago and today he can look at himself in the mirror again, recognizing again who he is and has the wish to live back. “My spirit is rekindled,” he states, and describes his biggest struggles in this time is to not use substances to escape his feelings.
Today he talks to his sponsor and other peers about his feelings and shares with them what matters to him. They help each other not to pick up a drug, no matter what, and he knows that he is not alone anymore with his problems or his addiction. In recovery, he only has to ask for help.
Robert wants to remember what addiction, drugs and alcohol took from him. He plans to remain grateful for the things that were so freely given to him in his recovery from others. His relationship to his family has been re-established and they talk to him again. He knows he still has a long way to go, but he feels very good about the progress he made so far.
