Jason joined us for the Atlanta Heroes 6K from Duluth, GA, a suburb of Atlanta. His family is directly affected by addiction. He is not in recovery himself, but he came to run the 6K race in Atlanta to support the cause, raise awareness and support his sister, who works for one of the main sponsors of the event.
In his family, Jason’s father and the uncle of his wife were both struggling with alcohol. Fortunately, both made it into recovery– one about six years ago and one found the chance for change ten years ago.
Jason wishes that everyone who is still in any kind of active addiction will find the inner strength to reach out for help. “It must come from the person. The person needs to reach out for help. Don’t wait for help to show up at your doorstep,” he says. “It is maybe difficult at first, but so worth it to reach out for help.”
He runs the race also to help break the stigma that is preventing millions of people from getting help.
