What started me on my recovery journey is when I ended up in jail. I was using meth daily. By the grace of God, I was given Drug Court instead of a prison sentence. I continued to use and had a warrant for leaving Drug Court. The turning point for me was when I looked around the room one night and realized that I didn’t have a single quality friend in my life. I made arrangements to turn myself in for a custody treatment program the next week.
I’ve been clean ever since.
I received help through Drug Court, in-custody treatment, outpatient treatment and Narcotics Anonymous.
The advice I would offer someone who is struggling is to give yourself a chance. I was told to give it a year and if my life wasn’t better, I was free to get high. That was over five years ago.
Beyond my wildest dreams. I have a stable job, a wonderful fiancĂ© who is also in recovery, a stepdaughter, stable housing and stable food supply. Everything I didn’t have in my using, I have today.
I would like to dedicate my Heroes 6K run to Matt Shenkman, who lost his battle with addiction a few months ago.
