My son’s father, who is my best friend, was addicted to meth. It has been a long hard 5 1/2 years for us. It’s not been an easy road but with the love and guidance from God we made it through. He put me through hell. We would fight and he would lie to me and use me. But I knew he was sick. Because I love him with all my heart and knew he needed help I just couldn’t walk away.
Our relationship is not perfect but it is better then it used to be. We love one day at a time. We accept the things we can not change, the courage to change the things we can, and the wisdom to know the difference. I have seen him sick and I have watched him cry. But I never left his side. I was his biggest supporter and still am to this day. I love him to the moon and back. For any family who is watching a loved one struggle from addiction please pray, pray, pray and be there for them but do not enable them.
The turning point was when Lee got tired of running and hiding he turned himself in. He entered a treatment facility for 30 days and did inpatient treatment.
Based on this journey the words of advice I offer to someone is to never give up. With God anything is possible. But also remember do not enable them because that sets them up for relapse.
Today, life is so much better. We can laugh together and not fight and go do things and not have to worry about looking for his next high.
Don’t give up!
