I headed over to a local shop in Brentwood, TN, today to chat with a woman I have met once before. I asked her if she would be willing to share a few thoughts on recovery with me, and she was more than happy to.
We chatted about the word “recovery” and what it meant to her. She said, “When I think of the word recovery, I think of someone being victorious over their situation.” It was powerful to hear her say, “Unless we walk through it, we don’t know what another person is going through.”
Her spirits were high as she talked about how she quit smoking because of Jesus Christ. She recalled folding laundry one day and hearing a voice telling her it was a good time to quit smoking. She set out at midnight and threw her last pack away. It was hard for her to sleep for the first 24 hours, but she kept herself busy with projects and work. She still has urges to this day to smoke, but it’s her passion for life and knowing where the smoking will take her that keeps her away from it.
Today Gail keeps busy with running her own shops and divides her time between home, work and family. She has found a balance that works for her. She offered this message of hope for those seeking recovery: “The best hope you will ever find is in Jesus Christ. No one can do it alone.”
