I had a wonderful phone call with Sandy H. today. I reached out to her on Twitter. She immediately responded with a willingness to help.
Sandy has been sober for 11 years with no relapses. When Sandy got sober, she did it with a promise to herself and a friend by her side. Just before that, she had gone through an overdose and a deep, dark depression. As a 20 year addict of crack cocaine and heroin, it was her first overdose, and it was enough for her to say “enough is enough.” She had no money, no detox drugs, no treatment. A big reason she feels she hasn’t relapsed is because she feels the pain was too great when she went through detox from drugs and alcohol.
Sandy works the 12 steps, keeps herself healthy and works hard for what she has today. With the path she has chosen, she has so many proud achievements. She is finishing up school, helping others and starting recovery groups within her community. She is most proud of raising her child. She is proud of the choices she has made in raising him and seeing him make good decisions in return. Sandy says there are no excuses in life and that no one is stupid. In her own words: “Everyone knows something; everyone has a brain.”
Her message of hope is “never give up.” She says you never have to be alone and you always have recourses, no matter what.
