Dennis grew up without a father. Some time ago he recognized that the way his life was going would mean that he would put his own kids through the same thing. The night his father died, he was over 300 miles away from Dennis, but Dennis the exact same thing himself: He was drunk driving and did not care. He did not want to pass this on to the next generation and is currently in long-term treatment.
Today, he reached four months of sobriety and had to learn, that he is not only an addict, but also an alcoholic and has to stay away from all substances to get his life under control. His life was unmanageable and he hopes to turn it in a different direction through treatment and attending 12-step meetings.
In the beginning, it was a struggle for Dennis to admit that he was powerless over drugs and alcohol. He learned to pray and found out that his higher power is guiding his life today. He is working the 12-step program to the best of his ability and is proud that he found recovery and a new way to live. Dennis tried to stop drinking and drugging before and never made it past the 24-hour-chip. He is proud to receive more chips as time goes by and looks forward to achieve the next milestone.
“Give your life a chance! Change isn’t bad!”, he says today to people who are newcomers to the center in Paducah, Kentucky. He has two more months to go in treatment and is looking forward to starting life again with the support and tools that he has now.
