My name is Karen, and I am so honored to share my story with you. I have been in recovery for an amazing 18½ years. I had substance abuse issues for quite a few years. They were very painful and difficult years. I would rather focus on the good part, my recovery! I realized that I wanted to end the pain and suffering and above all actively parent my son. I couldn’t do that without seeking recovery. I am blessed to say that with the help of a substance abuse recovery program and 12-step program, I was able to get there. I now work for sober living communities in my county, and I help others maintain their recovery. I get to spend every day with these other beautiful women who have made it and are working on permanent recovery. We are a team!
Since achieving sobriety I have found my purpose and passion in life. It’s so wonderful to have them. Some advice I would like to share with those still struggling is to remember that we are human. We mustn’t be too hard on ourselves. Live in the moment, and don’t worry about tomorrow. Don’t project the outcome. Just take one day at a time. Trust your higher power, and ask for guidance and help. Something my mentor shared with me 18 years ago is that anything I put before my recovery, I will lose. Those are wise words. Trust the recovery process, and take the risk of trying it! I am also a breast cancer survivor, and I am stronger and better for it.
Oh yes and about parenting my son, I am proud to report that he will be graduating college this year. Life in recovery is amazing, and I am truly blessed.
