The Power of Storytelling
To be a person is to have a story to tell. | Isak Dinesen, author
For thousands of years, stories have been an important part of human culture. They have been a catalyst used to impart morals and wisdom to younger generations. They have been a method of preserving our histories and our pasts. No matter what language we speak or religion we practice, we’ve all got a story to tell.
Sharing our stories isn’t only helpful to us as individuals, however. Our stories have the power to affect others as well. Your hope can give someone else hope. Your triumph can help someone else discover their inner strength. Your honesty can inspire someone else to evaluate their own life and make a change.
Your story has the power to influence others in ways you may never know. Last year, three million people asked for help regarding addiction. Nineteen million other people needed it, but didn’t seek help. When you start telling your story of recovery, it’s a chance to help others who are hesitant to seek help because they feel fearful, isolated and alone as they stand at the beginning of a seemingly overwhelming journey.
Check out our Heroes stories for inspiration on how to begin sharing your story of addiction and recovery. You’re welcome to join us on Facebook to connect with our recovery community. We want to know how far you’ve come so we can celebrate with you!
