The Strength of Self-Discovery

Heroes In Recovery
| January 11, 2012

If have read some of the Heroes stories, you may notice a familiar theme running through them. People struggling with a troubled home life, substance abuse, trauma, behavioral health issues and numerous other emotional, physical and psychological factors all found a new sense of identity in their sobriety.

Once they didn’t think they were “good enough.” Then they became valuable, purpose-driven, and hopeful.

Once they were strung out, rebelling against loved ones and going from job to job. Then they found restoration, security and meaning for the future.

Once they were heartbroken, full of pain and conflict. Then they found healing and strength to move forward.

A new day dawned for each person. They rediscovered themselves—some perhaps for the first time. It was a revelation that superceded “rehab.” It redefined their lives, not because of techniques or programs, but because through the help and support of loved ones and rehab professionals—and by means of useful tools and new behavior patterns—they learned something about themselves that only they could discover. It wasn’t something “rehab” could do of itself; it was something that they found during rehab that they had never seen inside themselves. But it was always there, and love and help brought it to light.

Maybe you think you’re not “good enough.” Maybe you’ve lost your sense of self and haven’t seen it for a while—and you don’t think you’ll ever get it back. But the people in the stories shared here would tell you otherwise.
