Anything is Possible
Exactly one month ago today, Heroes in Recovery lead advocate Mary Kate Legacy completed the 118th Boston Marathon.
Running the Boston marathon this year was such an honor. I got to be part of history and show how strong Boston is. The night leading up to the race I slept great. I woke up race day feeling awesome and ready to go. Everyone was so fired up and the energy was so positive. It was a beautiful day to be in Boston in many ways.
To be honest, a lot of the race is a blur. It was like I went into a complete blackout during most of it. I had my head phones in for the first three miles but took them out. The crowd didn’t stop. There were no lulls through the entire 26.2 miles.
It was a hot day to run especially after running in snow, on ice and in freezing temps all winter. There were points that I was scared I couldn’t make it, but every time I saw a runner on the MR8 team (Martin Richards team – Mayor of Boston) I kept going.
I thought a lot about the victims from last year. It kept me going. Throughout the race I saw so many friends. Every time I saw one it was a shot of adrenaline. Coming down from Heartbreak Hill was the hardest for me but that crowd keeps you moving. You could slap hands thought out the entire race. I have chills even thinking about all the love and support.
The feeling of turning onto Hereford St. then to Boylston St. made all the early morning runs, runs in negative below weather worth it. After I crossed the finish line there was so much to take in. Literally right after I crossed everyone was calling, texting, and Facebooking me.
Everyone was so proud of me and for probably one of the first times in my life, I was proud of myself. Running was such an incredible experience. Yet again I proved to myself that anything is possible if I stay sober and close to God. I can’t wait to run my next race!
