When I first got clean and sober my sponsor told me not to make any major changes for the first year of my sobriety. The logic being not to overwhelm myself by trying to take too much on at once. This included not giving up chewing tobacco which I was more than happy to do since I had no desire at all to quit.

To me, gratitude is like that one friend that you know you can always count on to come get you out of trouble once you’re in a mess. For so long (my entire life really), shame, anger and fear were those friends that I always counted on.

Imagine a world where instead of shaming and blaming people for abusing drugs and alcohol that we instead looked at them as having a problem with bonding. I’d love to see our focus shift from being less about simply staying clean and sober to being more about connection.
