Chris: I think the language around addiction has changed. I don’t think it’s where it’s supposed to be or needs to be yet. When it comes to addiction, I think we’ve really focused our energy and our resources on the worst day and not the first day, on how addiction ends rather than why it’s beginning.

One thing that makes me the happiest is to get that email from someone saying how much my Memoir helped them see their addiction clearly, and that they weren’t too scared to ask for help because of my experience. That is what keeps me blogging, connecting and doing whatever I can to help others in their sobriety plight.

When I got out of treatment and completed six more months of outpatient, I was unemployed and financially strapped. I had not been that way since college. I had been a teacher for 21 years and was not sure if I wanted to go back into the classroom sober. I had never taught without a hangover and totally sober before.

We talk a lot in recovery about recovery itself being an inside job (which it is). However, every single one of us, addict or not, has to heal from the inside out. If we can resolve what is happening to us on the inside, we’ll look better on the outside.
