How long have you been working in the recovery field?
I have been working in the recovery field for three years, but addiction has also affected my family and me as well.
What is your role in the recovery field?
Currently I am a substance abuse counselor and mental health therapist for a nonprofit organization working with women and children in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Are there positive things that have affected your life in working in the recovery field?
Absolutely! I have been able to see the growth in the families that I work with and the growth in my own family. There are definitely a lot of positive aspects of working in the recovery field.
What led you into working in recovery?
It was my own personal story of dealing with myself and my family. Addiction and mental illness can really tear your family and those around you apart, but recovery can build the relationships back up.
What is the most satisfying part of your job?
The most satisfying part of my job is seeing families reunited with their children and people rebuilding their lives back. I enjoy watching them get back those aspects that addiction took away from them.
Is there a piece of advice that you would give to someone that is thinking of going to seek a profession in the recovery field?
You have to make sure that you are compassionate for others and never give up on those that need help.
What piece of advice would you give to someone that is at the beginning of their journey into recovery that does not feel that they have what it takes to succeed?
One day at a time and keep coming back!
